KPV is a tripeptide, lysine-proline-valine, corresponding to residues 11 to 13 of alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone. It is the C terminal fragment, and the significant point is what it leaves behind: the melanocortin receptor activity of the parent hormone sits elsewhere in the sequence, so KPV carries the anti-inflammatory research profile attributed to alpha-MSH without the pigmentation effects that make the whole hormone unsuitable for that purpose. At three residues it is among the shortest peptides in commercial circulation, which makes it cheap to synthesise and unusually stable.
How KPV compares
Against alpha-MSH: KPV is the three residue tail, without the melanocortin receptor activity that drives pigmentation. Against melanotan I and II: those are alpha-MSH analogues designed to keep exactly the receptor activity KPV leaves out, so despite the shared parent they are studied for opposite reasons. Against BPC-157: different origin entirely, though both appear in repair research.
